A warm welcome to all our visitors welcome to our first blog on Hertfordshire headstones (part of Artisan Memorials).

We dedicate our first blog to a special stone in our range and that is Welsh Slate.

As the name suggests, it is from Wales and has been renowned for its exceptional quality and durability.

Long been a preferred choice in the field of monumental masonry, this stone is known for its impressive strength and resistance to weathering (that’s why we chose it for our workshop signage!).

It is a naturally dense, fine-grained stone, making it less porous than many other slates, which ensures it resists water absorption. This resistance makes Welsh slate highly suitable for outdoor use in monumental masonry, where exposure to the elements is constant.

One of the most prized characteristics of Welsh slate is its excellent workability. It is easy to carve and shape, allowing skilled masons to create intricate designs, inscriptions, and detailed sculptures. This feature is essential for monumental masonry, where precision and detail are crucial for creating lasting tributes.

Here at Hertfordshire Headstones we use this property to deeply V carve the letters, in monolith or Lawn or Kerb type gravestones, with the following results:

Beautiful Isn’t it? if you want to discuss this more in details with us, feel free to call us or email through the contact form below!

Once we receive your initial requirements, we will be in touch with you to setup a time to discuss your needs in detail.

All of our memorials are bespoke, so feel free to send us all of your ideas.

We can advise you on practical matters, such as format (monolith, law, kerb, plaque) wording and lettering.
